Working in a prison is different to working in the community or in an acute trust. In addition different prisons, provide different healthcare services depending on the needs of their patients.
Prisons have lots of secure doors which are unlocked and locked again to enable staff to move around.
Care is delivered in various parts of the prison, a mix between inpatients (if the prison has one) and outpatients, as patients may need intensive 24 hour care or just their prescription reviewing.
There are a number of terms used in prisons that you may not come across elsewhere, for example, an ACCT review (Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork) which is a document opened to support a prisoner at risk of suicide and self harm. However it is just like learning any new terminology, every job has a bit of jargon!
The key is to remember that health care in a prison environment is as much about caring for patients as in any other healthcare setting.
Just more interesting and a lot faster pace!
